Steve Shelton - Seattle, WA

Steve Shelton has been a working journalist since 1990 after completing a graduate degree in photojournalism at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. His work, largely inspired by an inner voice developed when he began playing the violin at age 4, spans disciplines, religions and continents, and remains grounded in editorial communication. Today, this voice manifests itself through his lens. After courtships with agencies and daily newspapers in St. Louis, Dallas, Kentucky, and Georgia, Steve today finds comfort in his independence.

Steve's reporting, both words and pictures from the Balkans, the Middle East, Central America, and most recently Sudan, has appeared in TIME, Newsweek, People, US News and World Report, Business Week, USA Today, MSNBC, the New York Times, Mother Jones, and the Washington Post, with help from the Associated Press, Black Star publishing, and Corbis.

Steve's work has been recognized, both regionally and nationally by the National Press Photographers Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Associated Press. In 1996 Shelton was named Georgia photographer of the year. He then moved back to his childhood home of Seattle, WA in 1997 to accept a staff position with the King County Journal Newspapers and helped them win sweepstakes awards in 1999, 2001 and 2002. Today he is a member of the Association of Media Photographers, and frequently transmits work from the field.
